BENTON HARBOUR, Mich. (WOOD) – Benton Harbor city leaders spoke outside the Berrien County Courthouse and hung a wreath on St. Joseph’s Pier on Tuesday to mark the 31st anniversary of the death by Eric McGinnis.

The 16-year-old died on May 17, 1991. His body was found in the Saint-Joseph River. It was initially ruled an accidental drowning, but in April of this year Michigan’s attorney general said it was homicide.

The person identified by the Attorney General as the main suspect in the business died in 2003.

Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad said Tuesday he thinks more should be done before Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel closes the case.

“We need to go back and forth in every nook and cranny when it comes to this case because to say it was a homicide and shut it down is not good enough,” Benton Harbor Mayor Marcus Muhammad said. . “It’s not a mockery because we’re grateful to the Attorney General for coming and letting it be known that it wasn’t an accidental drowning. But calling it a homicide and not holding anyone responsible, it is a miscarriage of justice.

He said he wanted the state attorney general to look into Judge Dennis Wiley, who was serving as the Berrien County prosecutor at the time of McGinnis’ death. Muhammad believes testimony and other evidence presented to Wiley’s office was ignored.

News 8’s coverage of this case continues Wednesday with a Target 8 investigation. You can watch this special report – The Death of Eric McGinnis – Wednesday night on The Seven.
