In our new Best of the City feature, we’re highlighting some of our favorite things, people, and places right now. We know that the past few years have been difficult. Here is a bright spot that will illuminate our city in 2022.

To Lighting designs, David and Hillary Albrecht’s love of woodworking literally shines through the delicate cut details of their laser etched basswood lanterns. The radiant boxes are assembled by hand in the husband and wife duo’s 1,000 square foot home studio in Newcastle, and can be ordered in natural blond wood or stained a rich brown, and in a range of styles – from plug -ins for indoor side table display or lit with twinkling LED votives to hang outdoors, for example. Designs range from Celtic knot patterns to silhouettes of bears and dragonflies, to spooky pumpkins for Halloween or a depiction of the Auburn fire station, one of the couple’s first designs from the time of their craft fair. While the fledgling company debuted as a booth at Auburn’s Old Town Christmas event in 2017, it wasn’t until 2020 that sales really took off as we were all looking for to add some light to our home life during the pandemic. Today, you can hang a lantern at stores like Auburn’s Avantgarden and Grass Valley’s The West Wind, or be spoiled for choice with over 90 dizzying designs available on the Luminarium website. With longer nights just around the corner, now is the time to shine.

Order at least five days in advance.
