ROCKPORT – The Center for Furniture Craftsmanship in Rockport announces a statewide call for nominations for the 8th Jury Maine Wood Biennial. The exhibit, which will be held in the Messler Center Gallery from January 21 to April 6, 2022, will once again showcase the breadth, creativity and excellence of woodworking craftsmanship in the state of Maine.

The deadline for registration is August 31, 2021. All artists and craftspeople in Maine who work with wood are encouraged to apply, including furniture makers, turners, sculptors, sculptors, luthiers and others. Work submitted must have been completed in Maine within the past five years. The criterion for acceptance is excellence in design and craftsmanship.

The jurors for the 2022 Biennale are Annie Evelyn, studio furniture maker and co-founder of Crafting the Future, Bakersville, NC; Reuben Foat, department director at Cerritos College Woodworking, Norwalk, California; and Gary Rogowski, director of Northwest Woodworking Studio, Portland, Oregon.

Eight prizes will be awarded at the opening reception on Friday January 21, 2022. These are $ 300 gift certificates or cash prizes offered by Tools for Working Wood for “Best New Maker”, by The Craftsmanship Initiative for “Best Original Design”, by Rare Woods, USA for “Best Use of Wood”, by Lie-Nielsen Toolworks for “Jurors’ Best in Show”, by Holt & Bugbee for “People’s Choice”, by Woodcraft of Portsmouth for “Best in Furniture”, by Packard Woodworks for “Best Turned Object” and by Rockler Woodworking and Hardware of South Portland, Maine, for “Exceptional Craftsmanship”.

Cosponsor craft organizations include the Maine Crafts Association, the Maine Woodturners, and the Maine Woodworkers Association.
