Wood Ducks combine for eight points in final inning of two games
Salisbury, MD – The Down East Wood Ducks combined eight runs in the seventh inning of both games to sweep the doubles program against the Delmarva Shorebirds on Sunday afternoon. The Woodies won Game 1 by a score of 9-5 and Game 2 6-2.
Down East (47-36) started the first game with a big first set as they kicked starter Delmarva Griffin McLarty out of the game after releasing just one. Jayce Easley started the game with a walk and was selected first. Things took a turn for the worse for McLarty as Daniel Mateo doubled up to third on a Luisangel Acuña single. With runners in the corners, Keyber Rodriguez scored Mateo for the 1-0 lead and Acuña moved up to third place. After a visit to the mound, Cristian Inoa opened the game with a three-run homerun (8) and Thomas Saggese hit a solo homeroom (7) to make it 5-0, in favor of the Wood Ducks.
Delmarva (45-38) started to come back, scoring five unanswered runs between the second and sixth inning to tie the score at 5.
The Wood Ducks responded in a big way with four runs in the top of the seventh. Mateo walked and advanced to second on a passed ball. Acuña followed with a single and Mateo went on to third. With runners in the corners, Acuña stole the second (29). With one out, Inoa reached the defensive player’s pick, but Mateo gave the go-ahead and Acuña advanced to third place. Saggese scored on the ensuing strike to score Acuña for the 7-5 lead. A wild throw took both runners to second and third, then Alejandro Osuna hit a fly sack to tackle Inoa to give Down East the 8-5 lead. Brady Smith continued his great streak with a brace to score Saggese for the 9-5 lead.
Nick Krauth took the no-call, pitching four innings, allowing two runs on three hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Destin Dotson allowed two unearned runs on a hit with one strikeout in an inning of work. Marc Church (W, 3-1) took the win, pitching two innings, while allowing one run on three hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
The Wood Ducks took the lead in Game 2 early in the third. With one out, Easley walked and stole the second (45). Mateo walked and the two runners advanced on an Acuña Groundout. With runners in second and third place, Rodriguez scored a single to score both runners to give Down East the lead 2-0.
Delmarva managed to tie the game at the end of the fourth with two points.
The game remained tied until the Woodies took the plunge in the start of the seventh. With one out, Keithron Moss made a single and stole the second (11). Easley walked and after a pitcher change Mateo chose to charge the goals. Acuña doubled up to bring Moss and Easley to the 4-2 lead, while Mateo moved up to third. Rodriguez was eliminated but Mateo scored, making it 5-2. Saggese continued their fantastic day with a single that marked Acuña for the 6-2 lead.
In his first start of the season, Jesus Linarez pitched three scoreless innings with one hit awarded and two strikeouts. Mason Cole contributed 2/3 of an inning, allowing two runs (one earned) on a hit with a walk and one strikeout. Teodoro Ortega pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings with one strikeout. Spencer Mraz (W, 4-4) took the win by pitching two scoreless innings with two strikeouts to end the game. The Woodies relieving box struck out the last 11 batters of the game.
With a day off scheduled for tomorrow, the Wood Ducks return home to Grainger Stadium on Tuesday. They will start a six-game homestand with the Carolina Mudcats.
